Chapter 10

Home Is Where the Heart Is

On the morning of the fifteenth, the day we were scheduled to catch our flight home, I woke with horrible cramps. I realized I must’ve started my period and downed some ibuprofen along with some Jack. Take that, you little bastards, I thought to myself.

Micki was busy packing and looked up to see my face. “What’s wrong, El?” She stopped what she was doing and sat down next to me on the bed.

“Nothing—just time for a visit from Auntie Flo.” I half smiled.

“Oh crap—okay, well, did you take something?”

“Yeah, I should be fine in a few minutes. I’ll get in the shower and get dressed.” I stood up slowly and pressed down hard on the area right below my belly button.

“Oh sweetie,” Micki cooed, standing up next to me and rubbing the back of my neck, “you get dressed and I’ll pack us up. We need to catch a taxi in an hour.”

By the time I got showered and dressed, the pills had started to kick in, allowing me to at least walk without being bent over. We were both dressed in shorts, T-shirts, and flip-flops, with a couple of Micki’s USMC sweatshirts pulled out in case the flights were cold.

When we got to the airport, Micki bumped us up to first class for our flights from Auckland to LAX and from LAX home. On the flight from Auckland to LAX, Micki got up to use the restroom once the plane had reached its flying altitude. She came back from the restroom and flopped down next to me. “Got any more ibuprofen on you?” she asked with a pained look on her face.

“Why? What’s wr— No! Don’t tell me!” I said, catching on.

“Yep—apparently we have already synced up.”

We spent the rest of the flight curled up together, sleeping, and woke up only to eat or use the bathroom. We did the same on our flight from LAX to Sea-Tac, and when we landed around ten on the evening of the sixteenth, we were both feeling a little better, although I was desperate for a shower. Sam and Jake met us at baggage claim. They sneaked up behind us at the baggage carousel and grabbed us in bear hugs.

“Hey!” they both shouted, and all four of us were in one large human hug.

“Oh Sam! Jake!” I exclaimed. “I’m so happy to see you guys!” I threw my arms around both of them and squeezed. Jake’s hair was almost to his shoulders in long, dark, wavy curls, his green eyes shining with curiosity.

“How was it? Did you two have the best time?” Sam began peppering us with questions.

“Yeah, it was amazing,” Micki answered timidly, and smiled at me.

Sam gasped and pointed at me. I hurriedly pulled her away from Micki and Jake.

“You had sex!” she exclaimed in a hushed voice. She had one hand covering her mouth and the other still pointing a finger at me. I glanced over at Micki, who was talking to Jake and watching the carousel for our luggage.
